What are the main events for today?

EUROPEAN SESSION

In the European session, the main highlight was the UK employment report. The data beat expectations across the board and brought forward rate hike bets for the BoE. Tomorrow, we will get the UK CPI report which could strengthen expectations further in case the core figures come out hot.

Looking ahead, we have the German ZEW survey which is expected to ease to 30.0 from 34.7 in the prior month. The data won’t change anything for the ECB, though, so the market reaction will likely be muted.

AMERICAN SESSION

In the American session, we get the US housing starts and building permits data. The housing data hasn’t been a market mover in this cycle, as the focus has been solely on AI which has been arguably the most important growth driver.

Yesterday, we got the NAHB housing market index, which fell to the lowest level since 2012. The NAHB index generally leads the housing starts and building permits data, so we might get lower than expected figures today. All of this shouldn’t be surprising amid elevated mortgage rates.
