BYD has unveiled a new battery and charging system that significantly reduces charging times for electric vehicles, bringing them closer to the convenience of refueling a petrol car.
During tests on its new Han L sedan, the system delivered 470 kilometers of range in just five minutes, according to chairman Wang Chuanfu. The company plans to start selling vehicles with this technology next month.
The breakthrough could be a game-changer for EV adoption, addressing one of the biggest concerns among potential buyers—charging speed. While Tesla’s Superchargers currently add up to 275 kilometers in 15 minutes, and Mercedes-Benz’s new CLA EV offers 325 kilometers in 10 minutes, BYD’s system significantly outpaces both. However, it requires new charging infrastructure, which the company has pledged to develop.
This ultra-fast charging platform will underpin many of BYD’s future models.
